Apple has released iOS 15, the latest version of its iOS operating system. It was released on September 20, 2021.

  • Focus allows users to filter out notifications and apps by focusing on specific topics at a time. If a user’s Focus blocks incoming notifications, their status in Messages will be shown to other users. iOS will suggest a Focus based on the user’s schedule. Users can also create their own Focus. A Focus that is set on an Apple device automatically applies to all other Apple devices.
  • Safari has a new design. The controls are easier to use with one hand and allow for more attention to the content of a webpage. The compact tab bar floats at bottom of the screen and allows users to easily switch between tabs. Tab groups let users save tabs and make it easy to access them from any device. For the first time, there is a customizable starting page as well as web extensions.
  • Maps now have a new 3D view of cities. This shows buildings, pedestrian crosswalks, and bike lanes. The new city-driving experience includes enhanced road details, improved Transit features such as pinned favorite lines, notifications to disembark, and AR walking directions.
  • iOS 15 adds voice isolation, and spatial audio to FaceTime calls. This allows voices to sound like they are coming from the location of the person on the screen. FaceTime now supports Portrait mode and has a new grid view that allows you to see more faces simultaneously. SharePlay allows users to collaborate on media while they are on FaceTime. Users can create shareable links for a FaceTime call. These can be opened on Android or Windows devices.
  • The redesign of the Weather app in iOS 15 has added more visual displays of weather data, full-screen maps, and dynamic layouts that adapt to changing weather conditions. New animated backgrounds are now able to accurately reflect the sun’s location and current precipitation. Notifications can be used to highlight when snow or rain starts and stops.
  • The Wallet app now supports key types that are not available in iOS 15. These include homes, offices, and hotel rooms. Customers in the U.S. will be able to add a driver’s license or state ID into the Wallet app by 2022.
  • Photos feature a major update of Memories, with a new design. Memories now support integration to Apple Music. This allows for personalized Memories by using on-device Intelligence to suggest songs.
  • Live text is a feature that uses on-device Intelligence to recognize text within a photo. Users can search for, highlight, and copy the text. Spotlight now allows you to search for photos by people, places, objects, text, and scenes. Spotlight offers richer results for actors and musicians as well as web image search. If it’s shared through Find My, the enhanced results for contacts will show you recent conversations, photos shared, and where it was located.
  • iOS 15 introduces privacy measures such as processing Siri requests directly on the iPhone. This has the additional benefit of better responsiveness. Mail Privacy protection prevents senders from knowing if an email was opened and detects a recipient’s IP address. An App Privacy Report view shows how frequently apps are using the permissions granted to them.
  • There are many tweaks and modifications for other apps such as user-created tags and mentions, an Activity view in Notes app and Trends, Walking Steadiness, and a new sharing tab within the Health app. A systemwide Shared with You features highlights content that has been shared through Messages conversations and a For All of You row in TV app to suggest entertainment for the entire household.
